Effective July 1, 2011, all South Carolina residents are required by law to recycle desktop, laptop, notebook and tablet computers as well as computer monitors, printers and televisions (e-scrap).
In May 2010, South Carolina passed legislation that requires residents to recycle e-scrap.
The legislation specifically says that residents “may not knowingly place or discard” a computer, computer monitor, printer and television “in any waste stream that is to be disposed of in a solid waste landfill.”
This ban takes effect July 1, 2011.
Where can you recycle e-scrap?
To make recycling e-scrap easy for residents, Greenwood County collects unwanted electronics at the convenience center located at 1115 Siloam Church Road, Greenwood. The center is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Many manufacturers and retailers also offer consumer recycling options. For information on these programs, please visit www.scdhec.gov/e-cycle and click on “Information for Residents” in the column on the left-hand side of the page.
What electronics are accepted for recycling by Greenwood County?
In addition to computers, laptops, computer monitors, printers and televisions, residents are encouraged to recycle the following items: cameras; cell phones and PDAs; GPS devices; video games (hand-held and console systems); radios and stereos; VCRs as well as CD and DVD players; ink and toner cartridges; rechargeable batteries; and other household electronic devices.
Note: E-scrap is NOT included in Greenwood County’s curbside recycling program.
